GSA Art Prize 2026

Off to Parkville

It’s August 28 and I’m heading to Parkville, home to the University of Melbourne’s main campus. Tonight I’m attending the Graduate Art Prize 2026, organised by the Graduate Students Association.

The Setup

Every graduate from the University of Melbourne is invited to enter the art prize. Hundreds of submissions were received, with only 60 works selected for exhibition.

How the Night Unfolded

There were prizes across several categories, and I had a front-row seat for the evening.

First came the conversations. People catching up, meeting for the first time, and gathering around the catering tables.

Then an Elder delivered the Welcome to Country.

After that, the GSA President addressed the audience and the awards presentation began.

One by one, artists were called forward. Cameras clicked, friends applauded, and there was a real sense of pride in the room as each winner received their prize.

The evening finished upstairs in the galleries, where everyone had the chance to spend time with the 60 exhibited works.

What Stayed With Me

What stayed with me wasn’t just the exhibition itself, but the atmosphere around it. The live music, the conversations, and the genuine interest people showed in each other’s work.

I always enjoy events like this. It’s rare to find yourself in a room where so many people have brought something deeply personal into the world and are willing to share it. Walking through the galleries, you could see that reflected in every piece on the wall.
